Babe Zaharius

The 1950 Babe Zaharias Golf Tournament for the 1950 March of Dimes Polio Campaign

Going through some of my grandfather's papers, we discovered an interesting and funny bit of little-known golf history. In 1950, my grandfather, was involved with  the 1950 March of Dimes Golf Tournament

sponsored by the great Babe Zaharias at her golf course in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

For this special tournament a custom built  beautiful putter with a large  diamond mounted in the face of the putter was to be given away. This putter was to go to the winner of the tournament and was to be presented by Bob Hope.

When it was time to present the putter to the winner of the tournament,  Bob Hope had lost the putter! A replacement putter had to be quickly made shipped  for the winner of the tournament. The first putter was never found. So for all you collectors, there is a very expensive custom made Jimmy Flowers Model 77 with a very large diamond mounted in the face of the putter at-large!

Not long after this even my grandfather made a model 555 for the Babe which resides in the Babe Zaharias Museum in Beaumont, Texas.
